More About Writing:
Phonics
Children access phonics from the very beginning of Reception at Scremerston First School. We are passionate about ensuring that all of our children receive excellent quality, systematic phonics teaching and learning so that they get the best start in their reading journey.

Cracking comprehension
Once children have completed the Read Write Inc programme to become a fluent reader they move onto Cracking Comprehension. Cracking comprehension is a programme used to help children practice and improve their reading comprehension skills across a range of text types and genres. A range of different units are completed each half term as these have been mapped out across the year.
English Policy & Scheme of Work
Our children access Spelling Shed to learn spelling patterns and tricky words. There is a good mix of paper based activities and online games to support their learning of spellings, which they then use in their English work and across the wider curriculum.
They love to challenge themselves to score higher in the games.
READING:
While the children are part of speed sounds groups and still developing their phonic skills they have reading books from the Read Write Inc range which are directly linked to their stage in phonics and have been read in their speed sounds sessions, they can also choose another reading book from the graded boxes, to extend and deepen their reading experience.
Once they have reached the end of Y2 or finished the phonics scheme they can choose reading books from the higher graded reading boxes, which are filled with exciting, age appropriate books for them to enjoy.
The children's reading is closely monitored, to ensure they are reading at the correct level, challenging but not so difficult that they can't meet with success whenever they open the pages of their books.
