Oracy

Oracy is a vital part of children's ability to communicate their ideas, hopes and aspirations. Oracy skills are essential in the development of all curriculum areas; if a child can explain what they have been learning we know they have understood it.  In order to be able to write about something children need to be able to talk about it.

Here at Scremerston we are just embarking on the second year of the oracy programme run by Voice 21

Voice 21 is the national charity that supports schools to build speaking and listening into the curriculum, teaching and learning and wider school life.

By developing our children's oracy skills we intend to improve their attainment across the curriculum and thereby enhance their chances and choices as they grow older.

Taking part in performances gives our children a chance to present to a larger audience than their class. All our children are encouraged to "have a go", if they feel confident enough (and most of them do!). As they get older they understand the need to speak clearly and slowly when presenting and to use their voices to communicate effectively - this is part of the physical aspect of oracy as well as the wider goal of performing.

The children speaking in this clip are in KS1 and Y4.
