OUR GOVERNING BODY
The Governing Body plays an important part in the life of our school. The Governors are responsible for the appointment of staff, management of the school, maintenance of the building, ensuring our high standards are maintained and a range of other matters which enable the school to function smoothly. All Governors are members of either the Resources Committee or the Curriculum Committee.
Governors formally visit school once a term and report back to the Governors’ termly meeting. Minutes of Governors’ meetings are available in school for inspection by parents.
Governors complete an annual Register of Pecuniary Interests, which you can find below.

Anne Robertson - Chair of Governors
Nichola Moffat - Parent Governor
My name is Nichola and I became a Parent Governor for the school in 2023. As well as having two children in the school, I also live in the village and love being a part of the Scremerston community. In my professional life, I’ve taken on various marketing and administrative positions, through which I have learned a variety of skills which I hope I can apply to my role as a Governor. In my spare time, I have a passion for running, reading and writing, and of course making memories with my children

Kiera Thorpe - Co-Opted Governor
I am a retired First School teacher from St Cuthbert’s First School and have always had a very positive relationship with the staff from Scremeston First. They have always been very welcoming, supportive and kind.
I have lived in Berwick now for twenty four years but originally come from Derry in Northern Ireland. I have two lovely daughters who both live in Edinburgh. So home is quiet with my husband and little dog .
I enjoy reading, walking and cooking. I have been trying to improve my abilities to bake scones but it is still hit and miss!
I look forward to working with the staff, children and families of Scremeston First School in my capacity of governor .

George Dance - Associate Governor
I moved to Scremerston in 1963 and spent three years as a pupil of the school the first two of which were at the original school now a private house next to St Peters Church.
I have spent all of my life living and working in the area and 30 years after leaving the school I was approached to fill a vacancy on the Board of Governors. I was delighted to accept but I would never have believed in 1995 that I would still be a governor almost 27 years later!
After about 10 years I was appointed chair of governors taking over from Lady Rose Crossman. I held this position until a couple of years ago when I managed to persuade Laura Catterall to take over and who is already doing a great job. I am proud of the fact that throughout my time the school has always been assessed as ”good” during the many Ofsted inspections that have taken place and this continued last year with Laura at the helm.
As a Chartered Accountant specialising in business management my main contribution to the school has been on the finance and resources side and again, due to careful monitoring and management, the school has always been able to work within the budget set by the local authority. I was the lead governor on the successful funding application and subsequent construction of the community building.
Sarah Smith- Headteacher Governor
Emma Holleywell- Teacher Governor
I am Emma, I have been a teacher at the school for over 12 years! My favourite thing to teach is music and I love singing assemblies on Thursdays.
I have 2 children, one of which is in Year 2 at Scremerston and the other is in Lucky Ducks Nursery onsite.
My roles on the governing body involve overseeing the curriculum and pastoral provision in school as well as monitoring safeguarding.
