Art & DT

Being close to Berwick upon Tweed, we are blessed with many opportunities to engage with a rich cultural and artistic heritage and have access to several galleries and museums which allow our children to experience art at first hand. A recent exhibition at the Granary gallery, celebrating the work of the artist L. S. Lowry was visited by 2 classes from our school

Local artists have come to school to work with our children and we have engaged with projects such as the Union Chain Bridge restoration to enhance the children's understanding of their local engineering heritage.

In October 2024 we worked with the Haltwhistle Film Project on a piece for a film they have produced about significant sites in Northumberland. Our section was about the Saltpan Rocks at Cocklawburn Beach - an impressive rock formation created by movement of the earth's crust many thousands of years ago.

The children worked alongside Ian Jackson,a geologist, to understand the creation of the rocks and then with Lydia Brockless, an artist to produce lino prints of fossils and other creative responses to their experience.

The work produced can be found at: https://www.dynamicnorthumbria.com/copy-of-saltpan-rocks-scremerston

Expressing themselves through a range of artistic ways is essential in Early Years as they develop their mark making skills and imaginative ways to communicate their ideas and feelings. The Expressive Arts and Design section of the EYFS Framework includes the artistic elements of the EYFS curriculum.

Expressive Arts and Design
The development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination
and creativity. It is important that children have regular opportunities to engage with the
arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. The
quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing
their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the
arts. The frequency, repetition and depth of their experiences are fundamental to their
progress in interpreting and appreciating what they hear, respond to and observe.
